New HPC rankings

Oil and gas dominates the industry section of the Top500high performance computing. Otherwise, not much is new.

While the Industry section of the latest TOP500 list of worldwide supercomputers is dominated by oil and gas companies (6 out of the top 10), there are no new O&G machines in the list. Top performer is ENI’s 2020 HPC5 Dell Power Edge based system at a reported 35 petaflops closely followed by ExxonMobil’s 2022 Discovery from Cray at 26 pf. Saudi Aramco has two machines in the top 10 (Dammam-7 and Ghawar-1), both Cray-based systems. Petrobras’ Pégaso from SuperMicro and TotalEnergies IBM-based Pangea III complete the Industry top 10. Systems are mostly based on AMD CPUs with Nvidia GPU co-processors. All run Linux of course. A word of caution: the Top500 is largely self-reported, many HPC operators may not wish to join in the competition. Moreover, evaluation is based on a somewhat artificial Linpack benchmark so your mileage may vary.
