Watson, Hana to marry

IBM’s cognitive computing, SAP’s business suite and database available from Austin, TX base.

IT behemoths IBM and SAP are teaming on a ‘co-innovation’ initiative to combine IBM’s Watson-based ‘cognitive computing’ with SAP’s S/4 Hana business suite and database. IBM SVP Bridget van Kralingen opined that ‘business strategy and value will derive from the foundational elements of cognitive computing, the cloud and from consumer-quality experiences in industry.’

The collaboration extends a strategic partnership covering Hana enterprise cloud services. IBM and SAP are now to develop industry-specific cloud solutions and expand current cloud services to include application maintenance and support services. For companies wary of the cloud, hybrid and on premise options will be available with Hana running on IBM Power systems and supported from IBM’s new SAP Hana center of excellence in Austin, Texas.

IBM will develop cognitive solutions for Hana and line-of-business solutions using its ‘cognitive’ APIs. A joint effort will also target the end user experience, with input from IBM’s iX unit and from the team behind SAP’s Fiori UX. The new team will be ‘co-located’ in Walldorf and Palo Alto.
