Following its stake in drilling case-based reasoning boutique Verdande Technology last year (Oil ITJ September 2011), Baker Hughes has rolled Verdande’s DrillEdge technology into a new WellLink radar remote drilling advisory service. WellLink RRDA uses case-based reasoning and event detection to minimize non-productive time and increase safety. RRDA mines historical drilling data from nearby wells to build a database of ‘cases’ such as lost circulation, tool sticking and vibration. Cases are categorized as sets of key drilling parameters such as weight on bit and flow rates and stored in a repository.
During drilling, the RRDA compares current measurements with the historical data in real time, issuing warnings when potential problems are identified. The ‘radar’ reference refers to a customizable polar plot of different situations showing the current situation of a well and the onset of potential problems. Baker Hughes reports that the system warned a client drilling in the ultra deepwater Gulf of Mexico of multiple events including pack-offs, overpull, maxed-out torque, string stalls and pore pressure changes.
