In a letter to Michael Bromwich, director of the US regulator Boemre, BP E&P outlined revised deepwater oil and gas drilling standards for its Gulf of Mexico operations. The ‘voluntary’ standards go beyond regulatory obligations and reflect the company’s ‘determination’ to apply lessons it learned from the Deepwater Horizon accident. The new standards address blowout preventer design and testing, cement testing and enhanced spill response planning. In addition to the new performance standards, BP has also implemented several actions including the establishment of a real-time drilling operations center in Houston. The company is also to share its experience of the use of remotely operated vehicles and management of marine response vessels and activities.
