Sintef, Hitec team on eDrilling Solutions software unit

Startup to develop computer aided guidance and control of drilling and well operations.

The Norwegian Sintef research organization has allied with Hitec Products Drilling to set up a new company, ‘eDrilling Solutions’ to develop software tools for computer aided guidance and control of drilling and well operations. First product to be released is the ‘eDrilling’ package, for simulating, monitoring and visualizing drilling operations in 3D and in real time.

eDrilling was co-developed by Sintef and Hitec, with help from Aker Solutions, during a three-year, NOK 35 ($ 5.2) million project financed by ConocoPhillips Norge and the Research Council of Norway. ConocoPhillips is currently testing the tool.

eDrilling business development manager Sven Inge Ødegård said, ‘With well costs of around $150 million, significant savings can expected from process optimization. We expect that the improved decision support provided by the eDrilling package will bring a 10% plus reduction in non productive time.’ The company will have offices in Stavanger and Bergen and expects to employ about ten people.
