Energy Institute gets backing from Saudi Aramco

Saudi Aramco’s ‘technical partner’ status reflects growing standards interest in Middle East.

Saudi Aramco has weighed into the standards arena by teaming with the UK-based Energy Institute (formed in 2003 the merger of the Energy Institute and the Institute of Petroleum) as a new technical partner. Aramco’s Netherlands-based unit Aramco Overseas Company (AOC) is to be involved in and support the work of the EI in ‘developing industry standards, guidance and codes of practice.’

Saudi Aramco organized its first International Standards forum and workshop last November in Saudi Arabia. The knowledge sharing event provided participants with an opportunity to broaden their understanding of the International Standards Organization (ISO) and its activity relating to the oil and gas industry. The meeting was attended by experts from 34 engineering standards committees.

Earlier last year Qatar Petroleum held yet another standards meet in the Gulf, this time with help from the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP). The workshops focused on standardization and cooperation between operators and standards bodies in the Middle East and Gulf region.
