Storewiz has been trialing its data compression appliance with two unnamed oil and gas accounts to determine the feasibility of lossless seismic data compression. Tests ran on a NetApp FAS980C/980 network attached storage (NAS) array over a Gigabit network. The results, according to Storewiz, demonstrated storage savings of 60-70% and a corresponding reduction in NAS CPU use.
Performance
Processing from the compressed datasets was not penalized by the compression. In fact bandwidth actually improved slightly, benefiting from servers’ parallelism. Best results were obtained with larger file sizes. But even for small files with low compression, process duration was little changed. The Storewiz appliance remained transparent to both client application and storage systems. According to Storwiz, the technology should allow companies to save on storage resources or streamline processing by pulling seismic data from tape to disk.
