The latest release, V3.0, of the Edig@s format is instructive in that it shows how legacy, ‘vanilla’ EDI still underpins gas e-business. Edig@s evolved from the 1983 GasNet protocol and is used by major EU transmission companies for data exchange. The Edig@s protocol continues to develop—with no notion that XML is likely to impact the standard in the foreseeable future. To ‘speak’ Edig@s you send messages like ‘BGM+34+01+9DTM+158:19970911:102’DTM+159:.. OK it’s not pretty, but apparently the 20 page spec does everything the gas folks need.
