Ampex unveils new tape system. (November 1997)

Using the same DD2 technology as in PECC’s Houston facility, Ampex’s latest robot, the DST 712 will initially hold up to 5.8 terabytes (TB).

Up to 116 50GB DST cartridges can be stored in the unit. Future upgrades will allow this to be increased in a modular fashion with each module adding from 3.2 to 6TB. Ultimate capacity using the modules is said to be unlimited. The new DST has a list price of $150,000 for the single drive configuration and $240,000 for the dual-drive configuration.
