Microsoft’s drilling ’solution’

Upstream reference architecture now does ‘big data.’

A new white paper from Microsoft, ‘How innovative oil and gas companies are using big data to outmanoeuvre the competition,’ subtitled, ‘Drilling for new business value’ is a buzzword laden editorial on ‘big data,’ the ‘digital oilfield’ and the 'internet of things.’ Big data comes from ‘previously untapped’ sources such as ’seismic input, weather patterns, or social media’ and combining such disparate data sources can lead to ‘interesting insights that empower decision-makers.’ Microsoft’s offering in the oil and gas big data stakes? It is our good old punching ball Mura, the Microsoft upstream reference architecture (Oil ITJ passim), now repurposed as a big data enabler.
