The 2011.1 edition of Paradigm’s geoscience interpretation suite adds graphics processing unit (GPU)-based computation of seismic trace attributes using Nvidia’s Maximus technology. Maximus workstations combine Nvidia’s Quadro GPUs with Tesla GPU-based compute engines for rendering and or simulation computation. The combo frees up CPU resources for I/O, running the operating system and multi-tasking and also allows the GPU to be dedicated to its display role. In the seismic context, this means that seismic trace attributes can be computed in the Tesla for display in the Quadro. Paradigm claims the technology offers ‘interactive or dramatically reduced calculation times’ for the interpreter.
Oil and gas executive with Nvidia, Paul Holzhauer said, ‘Interpreters can now do complex seismic analysis on their desktops, improving the interactivity and enabling faster and better decisions.
