This months news overflows into Neil McNaughtons editorial. Shell is hiring and both Schlumbergers Oilfield Services and Halliburtons rebranded Digital Consulting and Services units report record revenues. Returning from the UK PESGBs PETEX conference, McNaughton notes the success with which the UK DTI keeps the North Sea pot bubbling-but questions how much of this can be attributed to its plethoric e-government initiatives.

2004 PETEX Conference and Exhibition

The Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain (PESGB) was founded in 1964 and is celebrating its 40th anniversary.
PETEX, the PESGBs biennial conference and exhibition, has become a showcase for new European oil and gas information technology.
At this years show we spotted two new seismic interpretation packages, Inpres from Valioso and Continuums Geocap. This is not a big show
for the major vendors but we did manage to get a peek at the new AVO packages: Landmarks Well Seismic Fusion and Schlumbergers Well Driven Seismics.
Other items of interest include new tools for portfolio management and a new tool for HSE reporting, Xait Porter which, despite a very small booth,
receives our star of show award. Also of note is Working Smarts Oilfield Licensing System, developed with guidance from John Brooks,
ex-head of licensing at the DTI.
