2005 PESGB Data Management SIG

A decade ago, unclean data, mostly in the form of inconsistent well names, plagued the data management community, but nobody else seemed to care. Paras Hamish Wilson suggested that today, compliance issues are renewing interest in technical to business data integration and are forcing IT departments to clean up their data act. Neil McNaughtons presentation on upstream standards showed that while there have been failures, the oil and gas is a serial early adopter of new technology. Other presentations covered the impact of freedom of information legislation, gravity data management in Shell and a novel data store developed for the WAHA Oil Co., Libya.

SPE Digital Security in Oil and Gas

The Society of Petroleum Engineerings Conference on Digital Security covered the security aspects of information sharing across joint ventures, complex data types and a nomadic oil and gas population. SCADA and Process Control Systems as deployed in productions facilities, pipelines and refineries present specific security issues. Oil and gas security initiatives roll in government organizations such as the US Department of Homeland Security, and academic institutions. Oil company presentations included Chevrons work on a pipeline security test with the DHS, BPs approach to SCADA security, Shell on smart cards for access control and Oxys frank presentation of the harsh reality of a true (near) disaster, hurricane Rita. A KPMG presentation described SOX impact.
